There was a significant change in 1982 WRC due to the emergence of a new model; Audi introduced quattro series equipped with 4WD system. During that time, most people considered the advantages of 4WD was few in rallying and in all other motorsport Competition.
However, The quattro with straight 5-cylinder engine produced over 300 bhp and transferred the power to the ground through the 4WD system, the quattro stood out in its debut during 1981 Monte Carlo Rally season. In its debut competition, it was called off for a major breakdown. But later it won the Swedish Rally and had another 3 wins in the same year.
The quattro won the manufacturers title in 1982 and secured the drivers titles in 1983.
On watching the huge leap of Audi quattro, other manufacturers started developing 4WD engine and 4WD turbocharger became the main stream for the later Group B.
In order to fight its rivals, in the mid 1984, a section of 320mm was cut from the wheelbase for which the Sport quattro had massive overhangs that increased the difficulty of driving it. Some modifications had been made on the quattro for producing over 500 bhp output, which includes adding aerodynamic system on the front and rear part of the car, putting the radiator and oil cooler in the rear part of the car which allowing for a better weight distribution. The Audi Sport quattro S1 E2 won the second place on its debut and the championship of 1985 San Remo Rally with Walter Rohrl driving.
