New to the RC Hobbies? What does buggy, bulkhead, nitro mean in radio control car hobbies? Check out the glossary for remote control cars below.

T

  • T Bar --
  • A flexible plate resembling the letter 'T' used to mount the rear motor pod to the chassis on pan style cars. T bars are commonly available in a variety of thicknesses and materials to alter the flex (damping) of the rear pod. The T bar determines rear suspension stiffness as well as side to side flex, and usually works in conjunction with a top mounted damper. Also See FLEX PLATE

  • Tamiya Connector (Plug) - Molex Plug --
  • You will most likely find this 15 amp plug on the end of the wires of that 2300 mAh battery pack and pre wired ESC you just bought. This may be the standard old school RC electrical connector, and may be refered to as a MOLEX plug (MOLEX is a brand name of a plug manufacturer). Back in the days, TAMIYA connectors worked just fine, but the newer high amp motors and high voltage batteries may melt them during high loads. The most notable feature of this connector is the 2 large, white plugs, which are shaped to prevent accidentally reversing the polarity. A 'male' end slides into a 'female' end, and they are firmly locked together with an integrated clip. That concludes sex ed for the day.

  • Temp Gun - Temperature Gun --
  • Wanting to know how hot something is may be an OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) of many RC addicts - whether it's the temp of engines / motors, batteries, tires, track surfaces (at umpty nine locations), or even trophy girls, an addict has know it. Luckily, there's the temp gun. This device measures temperature in the infrared spectrum, just point it at the object in question and push the button. Try to keep the sensor end about 1 inch from the area being temped, and the best place to check engine temp is at the glow plug.

  • Threaded Rod --
  • A type of connecting rod that has threads facing the same direction. As opposed to a turnbuckle, a threaded rod is harder to adjust because one or both ends must be detached to make an adjustment. Also, the threaded rod forces large adjustments to be made because of the nature of the threads. A turnbuckle can be adjusted in small or large amounts.

  • Throttle Return Spring --
  • The mechanical failsafe. A spring attached to a nitro engine's throttle body or throttle servo horn and a static position on the chassis. This spring should be stiff enough to pull the carb closed when servo power is lost (such as due to a battery failure or glitching), but still allow the carb to operate under normal conditions. This puts the engine in idle, preventing a run away model from streaking off into the horizon under full power (or whatever power it was at when control was lost).
