May 15th, Practice Day,
Practice opened at 9am Friday. The track was a little rougher than intended due to the black gumbo used being really hard to lay smooth. The good part of it was there was mega traction whether the track was wet or dry! Racers had to learn how to ease into the cormers or suffer a traction roll. We pushed back the practice races until 6pm to allow late arrivals a chance to get in some practice. Spectator turnout on friday was good considering most of the track time was open practice and we only did announcing during the races at the end of the day.
May 16th. Race Day,
Race day didn’t start out to well. Some time around 3am a major storm blew through the track and dropped between 2 – 3 inches of rain along with blowing down the straight away and left side fencing, plus multiple tents around the speedway. At 8am when we arrived it was still raining so we had to wait until it let up to start repairs. Once we started draining the areas holding water it started raingin again. Finally around 3pm we were able to get started with a round of heats. After 2 heats we decided to hold off for another hour since the buildup of mud was causing issues with some of the cars. After some gear changes to lessen the amp draw on the Slashes we went back racing finally completing one round of qualifying. The next issue was build up of mud on the front tires to the point of no steering. So the consensus from the racers was to shorten the main length and everyone setup in stock form. We shortened the main to 3 minutes since the front tires were loading up at the 3 ½ minute marks. The main started the 12 drivers that hung with us all day and produced some really fun battles.
The A main started out with 3rd qualifier Mike Young taking the lead on the land rush start. By the end of lap 2 the top qualifier Mark Morrow had taken over. The big mover was 9th place qualifier Mike Battaile moving into the 4th spot on the start and taking over 3rd by lap 2. On lap 5 he moved into 2nd past Young. 2nd qualifier Ron Taylor dropped all the way back to 5th early and then came back one spot to finish out in 4th. At the end it was Mark Morrow with the win only .6 ahead of Battaile followed by Mike Young in 3rd and Ron Taylor in 4th.
